Team Hoyt Denver is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the joy of running races to disabled people in the Denver metro area. We pair runner athletes with rider athletes who are pushed to the finish line in specialized wheelchairs, ensuring that no one is left on the sidelines. Our mission is to carry on the legacy of the Hoyt family and provide an inclusive environment for all to participate in running events.
Rick Hoyt was born a spastic quadriplegic, confined to a wheelchair. In 1977, Rick told his father Dick, who had never competed in a running race, that he wanted to participate in a 5 mile benefit run for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. After the race, Rick told his father that when they were running, it felt like his disability disappeared. Over the next 30 years, they competed in over 1,000 races including 32 Boston Marathons and 6 Ironmans! In 2013 they were awarded the ESPY Jimmy V Perseverance Award.
Our team is made up of amazing volunteers with a passion for equity and inclusion in sports. We are always looking to grow our team. We need runner athletes, rider athletes, race day support, cheerleaders and more!
We partner with a variety of organizations and businesses in our community. Please help us fulfill our mission by donating or sponsoring Team Hoyt Denver. All donations are tax deductible. The expenses we incur are numerous and include: racing wheelchairs (nearly $5,000 per chair), race day registration fees, hospitality tent, t-shirts, racing singlets, and much more.
Together, we can bring the transformative power of running and racing to all athletes.
